Come dine with me
Lady Wisdom invites you to dinner.
All is prepared.
Her house is beautifully and tastefully decorated.
The table is set. The lamb is in the oven. The wine is open.
And who will the other guests be?
Anyone who accepts the invitation.
So no cynics then. They’ll find a reason not to go. They always find a way to stay firmly within their comfort zone. They’ll be suspicious and think there’s a catch. ‘There’s no such thing as a free lunch’ and all that.
Which is a shame, because she’s inviting everyone who’s confused about their life to come and discover a life with meaning. This is basically the very first Alpha Course right here!
Yes, of course there’ll be those that poke fun at you for even thinking of going. Those who are happy enough living a less than perfect life. Those that have a feeling they’ll be challenged about their laziness or greed or selfishness or dishonesty and would rather find a way to stay well away.
But those that care about life, about discovering what it is to live life to the full, they’ll be heading straight for her door. They’ll be excited at this opportunity to learn, to be challenged, to move on in their lives. They’ll be grateful for the invitation.
But then of course, there’s that other invitation. There’s all those people walking the other way. Who are tempted by this invitation to easy living, to indulgence. This invitation from Madame Whore who knows how to seduce. Who’s an expert on targeted advertising. She has donuts and prosecco and massive tubs of Haribo. And THE biggest chocolate fountain you’ve ever seen. If you’re confused by life, she’ll help you forget. She’ll show you a good time. She’ll make you believe it doesn’t matter. She shows you the delights of the here and now, with no thought for the future. No understanding of the consequences. She’s good at this, there’s no doubt about that.
So which invitation will you accept today? Both of these are found in Proverbs 9. How that pans out for you today is for you to work out.
