Exodus – the Movement of Jah People
The whole Exodus story has inspired thousands of different artistic responses to the belief that God will save us. One of my favourites is Bob Marley and the Wailers’ song ‘Exodus’.
Jah is an anglicised version of the Tetragrammaton – the name of the God in the Old Testament which had no vowels as it was never spoken – YHWH. This is where we get the words Yahweh or Jehovah from. You will also be familiar with it in the word hallelujah – which literally translates as “praise the LORD”.
Jah is still used by Rastafari’s as their name for God today and features in lots of reggae music too. This song is a song of struggle and release. “Send us another brother Moses” speaks to the very heart of Rastafari view of the world – liberation for downtrodden people. “Jah come to break downpression, Rule equality, Wipe away transgression, Set the captives free.” is straight out of the words of Jesus at the start of his ministry.
So enjoy yourself and get your hips swinging to bit of reggae today.
