Psalm 106-110

FIVE SIMPLE PLEASURES:

  1. fresh sheetsWatching my dogs do ‘zoomies’ through the trees
  2. Feeling pleased with a piece of work
  3. Fresh sheets
  4. Planning my new life
  5. Bed – after yearning for it all day!

PSALM 106: REMEMBER HOW GOOD GOD IS!

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his love endures for ever.  v1

This psalm contains a potted history of the Children of Israel as they are delivered from Egypt and wander in the desert. When ‘they gave no thought to your miracles’; they did not remember; they rebelled; they soon forgot; they did not wait for God’s plan to unfold; they gave into their cravings; they put God to the test; they grew envious; they did not believe his promise; they grumbled in their tents….it goes on and on and on, getting worse and worse and worse…..

And yet…

And yet God saved them…

And yet He took note of their great distress…

Out of His great love.

PSALM 107:LISTEN

Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind. v8

Let others speak. Listen to their story. Let them explain how God is working in their lives. Stop talking and listen.

PSALM 108: I KNOW FOR SURE

My heart, O God, is steadfast;
I will sing and make music with all my soul. v1

Having worked this far through the psalms, I know. I’ve been saying and thinking and trying to believe and live out the fact that I can trust God in everything. Eventually it does start to sink in. The questioning and doubts come less often. There is a deep assurance. God is God. God can be trusted.

PSALM 109: WHAT I WOULD DO TO THEM…

With my mouth I will greatly extol the Lord;
in the great throng of worshippers I will praise him.
For he stands at the right hand of the needy,
to save their lives from those who would condemn them. v30-31

David has lots of ideas of what he thinks God should do to his enemies. Fortunately, he leaves it to His God to deal with them. They are accountable to God. He can leave the revenge/justice/consequences to God.

PSALM 110: GOD KEEPS HIS PROMISES

The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind: v4

Here, David is clinging to God’s promises of deliverance and victory. But God is unchanging. God is faithful. God keeps all His promises. God does not change His mind.
