Psalms 146-150

FIVE SIMPLE PLEASURES:

  1. messy teenage bedroomWriting in bed
  2. The satisfaction of blitzing my daughter’s bedroom
  3. Watching an inspiring family film with the kids
  4. A genuine thank you from my daughter
  5. Completing this task of five psalms a day!

PSALM 146: TRUST GOD ALONE

Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord their God.
He is the Maker of heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything in them –
he remains faithful for ever.
He upholds the cause of the oppressed
and gives food to the hungry. v5-7

These three verses pretty much sum up the themes that have been ON REPEAT throughout this journey through the Psalms. Trust God alone. Because He made everything. And don’t forget the poor and exploited – because God never will.

PSALM 147: POWERFUL AND PERSONAL

He heals the broken-hearted
and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars
and calls them each by name. v3-4

These verses side by side show the personal nature of God – that He cares deeply for the individual – alongside the immensely powerful nature of God – that He knows and controls every star in the universe.

PSALM 148: A CALL TO CREATION

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for at his command they were created….  v5

A call to all created things – in the heavens above and on the earth below, including us humans – to praise God, the Creator and sustainer of all life.

PSALM 149: GOD ENJOYS US!

For the Lord takes delight in his people;
he crowns the humble with victory. v4

We sometimes get so caught up in the idea of a God of justice and judgement and discipline that we forget that we were created for God’s pleasure. He takes delight in each one of us. He enjoys us.

PSALM 150: PRAISE THE LORD!

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord. v6

A fitting place to end this journey through the Psalms with the very final verse of the final psalm! This is what the whole journey has been about. A month of learning to praise God for everything and in every circumstance. Breath itself is a gift from God and while I still have it, I will thank Him for it.
