Psalms 91-95
FIVE SIMPLE PLEASURES:
- Buying a cool clock and dog statue with Christmas money for our hall
- Having the kids sit and chat on our bed at bedtime
- Making home-made granola
- Writing a piece on train travel
- Watching Jordan try something new
PSALM 91: BE ASSURED
He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. v4
I love the gentleness and strength side by side in this verse. As gentle as a bird sheltering its young in the shadow of its wing. As strong as the strongest shield and wall.
PSALM 92: LET EVERYONE KNOW
They will still bear fruit in old age,
they will stay fresh and green,
proclaiming, ‘The Lord is upright;
he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.’ v14-15
I’m leaving work. And I’m getting a few comments about retiring – ‘are you going to sit in a chair knitting like a nanna?’ was one. In fact, it’s the opposite. I’m moving on to embrace life even more fully. There is no time to stop living life to the full. Growing older does not mean living life less. Yes, our body will begin to slow us down – even our mind too sometimes. But we can always find a way to bear fruit. To stay fresh and green. We should never write older people off as ‘past it.’
PSALM 93: MIGHTY
Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
mightier than the breakers of the sea –
the Lord on high is mighty. v4
I love watching the waves pounding on the shore. Breaking over the rocks. The immensity. The power. The majesty. God is above the waters. He created them. He is mighty.
PSALM 94: OUR EVER PRESENT GOD
When anxiety was great within me,
your consolation brought me joy. v14
It’s so easy to get on with life and forget that God is there. God is ever present. God sees all, hears all. Sometimes that feels like not such a good thing – when we’re doing something we’d rather He didn’t see or hear. Other times, it is an enormous consolation. In those anxious moments – then it’s really good to know that God is ever present.
PSALM 95: OUR GOD IS A GREAT BIG GOD
For the Lord is the great God,
the great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth,
and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land. v3-5
Our God is so big, so strong and so mighty, there’s nothing that He cannot do. The mountains are His, the valleys are His, the stars are His handiwork too. Our God is so big, so strong and so mighty, there’s nothing that He cannot do.
